How to Save on Grocery Shopping

The Covid-19 pandemic forced me to do something I really dread…grocery shopping. I am not afraid to admit I have contributed a great deal of money to Uber Eats and Seamless in the past. When things were shutting down and I analyzed my grocery spending after a couple of months I found I was burning money needlessly.

When you are grocery shopping you can easily fall prey to buying products you don’t need and general overspending. After further analysis I came up with some ways to save more and force a change in behavior. After going through the list below I am sure you’ll find new ways to start saving too.

1.Make a list – If you make a grocery list you’re likely to stick to it. If you go shopping without a list then you will buy products you don’t need that catch your eye which will just go to waste and bring you a negative return on investment.

2.Go Generic – According to studies, generic foods are 30% cheaper than name brand foods. While there are certain cases where it may be better to get a name brand  product, see if you can go generic and get the same quality for a lower price.

3.Buy groceries online – Though it might cost more to buy groceries online it might actually save you money. The reason why is because you’ll see the total cost before you check out. If the number is above your budget you can find what to trim. Buying online also takes away temptation.

4.Use a meal planner – When you plan your meals you know exactly what you need to buy. This also means you will reduce last second trips to the super market and will not need to resort to take out.

There are many more ways you can save money grocery shopping but if you start with those steps you will be on your way to cutting down on grocery spending. Every dollar you can save in one area is a dollar you can put towards debt, retirement, or an investment. What grocery shopping tips would you recommend? I would love to hear them in the comments below.
